In recent years, the performance gap between Processor and Memory has a badly effect on the overall performance of a computer system. Researchers have tried to resolve the problem from various aspects. One of the resolutions is to integrate processing units and memory unit in one single chip (usually referred as PIM technology). Since the early of 1990's,a lot of famous universities and companies in the world have invested great manpower and materials to the research on this new microarchitecture, and have designed different schemes within the framework of PIM.On the basis of analysing the PIM's typical structures (CRAM,PPRAM and VIARM) in depth, in order to overcome the deficiency existing in these architecture,we have proposed a new architecture which integrate processor with memory,PMIA.This architecture can resolve the open problems existed in other PIM architecture.PMIA can(1) support chip design's scalability, making it be able to adjust according to different application and workload,so as to archive high ratio of performance and cost;(2) overcome the bottleneck of the centralized vector register files, and resolve the accessing conflict in a relatively flexible way;(3) support accurate exception handling in a simple way;(4) use the algorithm which is successfully applied in the design of scalar processor to manage the running of the vector co-processor;(5)adopte modular and distributed layout and handle the communication problem among modules-,(6) excavate the bandwidth of the memory, and hide the accessing delay;(7) support multiprocessor application etc..In the paper, we have proposed the PMIA's design scheme, and designed the logic of the processor in PMIA and memory system. We have simulated and analysed the PMIA's performance with DLXV simulator. The results indicate that performance with PMIA can be improved obviously, compared to VIRAM. Finally, we have studied how to exploit PMIA in multiprocessor systems. To build multiprocessor systems using PMIA processors can offer more efficient and succinct support than to realize with traditional CPU.
