With the development of broad-band transmission and access network and the building of all-optical network (AON), many active and passive components are introduced in the optical communication. Because of small bulk and easily integration and large saturation output power, semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) plays important role in the extending communication distance and the building of the passive optical network (PON), SOA is the key device to the development of optical communication and AON, WDM, TDM. Many countries carry out an research on theory and technology and craftwork of SOA. The performance and cost of SOA are relative to the coupling and package technology, so in this thesis, the coupling and package technology are studied, and the main content is as follow.1. The development of SOA is reviewed; the performance and characteristic of several main optical amplifiers are compared; the coupling and package technology of optical component are summarized; the purpose, significance and work content of this thesis are demonstrated.2. Use the field coupling theory of Gaussian beam, the effect of the fiber head shape to the coupling efficiency is calculated, and the design method of fiber micro-lens is given; the effect of coupling lens is calculated by using the ABCD transmissionmatrix and the experiment data is given.3. In order to improve the coupling efficiency, the design and fabricate of the binary optical device are designed.4. We first develop the butterfly SOA device in China. The test of SOA is performed, so the correlative performance of SOA device is given.
