Generally, drawing die design includes process analysis, structural parts design,drafting etc. Traditional drawing die design relies on the experience of designengineers and frequent referencing from the engineering manuals. Consequently, itrequires a lot of redundant work without efficiently applying the existing knowledgeand experience. With the development of CAD techniques and its extensive use in diedesign, drawing die design has been improved drastically. However, the drawing diesdesigned and generated by general commercial CAD systems often failed to meetuser's specifications because the systems were not developed with the knowledge ofthe drawing die design processes. Therefore, this approach can not meet themanufacturing requirement of industry due to the limited design efficiency andquality. Framework of design flow and knowledge driven drawing die CAD systemis constructed based on the detailed requirement of national project of drawing diedesign. Also some research is carried out about the data process, distribution methodof drawing coefficients, structural parts rapid modeling etc. Among them, thedistribution method of drawing die is improved. Based on the above mentioned research, a drawing die system driven by designflow and knowledge is implemented on CATIA platform. The system includes 4modules: information processing module, process analysis module, process structuralpart design module and rapid drafting module. Meanwhile, background databaseshave been established, such as drawing die standard parts library, drawing dieframeworks library, process knowledge library. The performance of the system isvalidated via the rapid design of the drawing die for seven different types of partssuch as cylindrical parts, rectangular parts, elliptical parts, oblate parts. Theapplication of this system in industry has shown that design is significantly speeded.
