Along with the development of science and technology, free-form surfaces is already the most complicated and often applied in the engineering, in the field of aviation, shipbuilding, automobile, power and energy industry many shapes of workpieces are space curved surface, such as airfoil of airplane, body of car, surface of die and mould part. More and more these complicated parts, the accuracy requests are increasingly high. To find solutions to design and machining of free-form surfaces accurately and efficiently is necessary. It is taking sax reeds which was design and CNC machining by existing CAD / CAM software CATIA as an example to introduce the technology of free-form surface of the design and CNC machining.First of all, the paper simply introduces the research history of free-form surface, free-form surface geometry analysis and research methods. Then it discusses the advantage of CATIA and introduces the technology of it's entities and surface modeling; taking sax reeds as an example to introduce the modeling process of free-form surface, with analysis by free-form geometry and basic knowledge of research methods and choicing the appropriate modeling methods. Next, it introduces a three-axis CNC milling machine was manufactured, numerical control technology on the basic principles, the three-axis CNC milling machine system hardware and software and the CNC into the script of the relevant knowledge as well as some mechanical structure.Next it introduces the setted up sax reeds model will be imulation processing and generation of NC program by setting the relevant parameters CATIA CAM technology; then transmit generated NC program to the NC system through the data lines, finish the workpiece clamping rough , set the workpiece coordinate system and the workpiece origin, operation of CNC systems, achieve sax reeds'CNC machining; in this way free-form surface CNC machining technology was introduced. Finally the paper summarizes main work for this subject,achievment and puts forward prospect about this subject.This paper derives from a practial application subject, so, to some degree, there is certain of theory meaning and reference value in this paper ,especially for those staff who are engaged in design and machining of free-form surfaces or study and developing numerical control system and device.
