Workflow technology is one of the most active research areas and the main methods for business integration between intra- or inter- organizations. Service-Oriented workflow system is the evolution of traditional workflow management system. It not only facilitates the development of intra-enterprise business processes applications, but also can easily realize service collaboration and integration between enterprises. So it can deal with the changed requirements of the e-business.Workflow technology aims to improve the efficiency of business operation, and asynchrony is one of the properties of enabling techniques to improve the productivity. Hence, introducing asynchronous processing mechanisms into the service-oriented workflow system is a good technical solution. However, this technical way also faces many new challenges: especially about where and how to introduce asynchronous processing into workflow system, and so on. In this thesis, based on service-oriented workflow system-OncePI, we conduct the study on asynchronous architecture style, workflow model and its implementation aiming to solving these issues. On asynchronous architecture style, we firstly introduce asynchronous processing, and analyze the asynchronous architecture style, and its virtues. Then some instances about this style are presented. We also discuss how to apply asynchronous processing into workflow management system. With regard to workflow model, we firstly put forward a basis workflow model in a formal way and propose a set of validation rules for well-formedness of workflow model, then extend the basis model and propose an asynchronous model. Also, validation rules for well-formedness of asynchronous model are given.Concerning implementation, based on the asynchronously extended workflow model, we bring forward some key techniques about asynchronous processing and their realization. We give a brief introduction of OncePI, including its key components: studio, Process Server, WorkList Server, and then give its design and implementation of the asynchronous processing extension of OncePI.
