Personal Navigation System is an important branch in the further development of Intelligent Traffic System (ITS). In the past few years, person navigation, which is based on pervasive computing system, is used in portable mobile devices, not only in vehicle navigation.Many problems are left in traditional personal navigation system: it can not fit the dynamic network environment; it relies on the software components technology object call dependent and the call among components are based on the fixed, negative and inflexible Bus standard; it also couples computing and cooperating whose interaction does not apply to Internet due to its distributed object technology.This paper aims at introducing Mobile Agent technology into the personal navigation system. In order to improve the efficiency of communication, this paper introduce the computing mode and cooperation theory of Mobile Agent into the personal navigation system, and finally design and accomplish a personal navigation system, matching the requirement of pervasive computing. Therefore, pervasive computing theory and Mobile Agent technology are referred in this paper. At the beginning, it explains the relationship between pervasive computing theory and personal navigation. And then it import the Agent's computing mode and cooperation theory into the personal navigation system, and a Mobile Agent-based software service cooperation model is introduced in order to resolve the problem in network the personal navigation system faces with, such as narrow bandwidth, high delay, network congestion and intermittent. In the latter part of it, a communication Mobile Agent-based middleware is introduced after making a comparison and filtering of leading development platforms. It is developed on JADE - LEDP platform, used for traffic field, and based on Mobile Agent, and the design process, deployment, and the outcome of it are presented. At last, it introduce the design and implement of the middleware-based personal navigation system, which has been successfully tested on PC and POCKET PC 2003 Simulator, including function modules of map control, route design, route guide, GPS, map retrieval and wireless communication.
