Business processes play important roles in enterprise's management, for there are various business processes in modern production and management activities. Among the functions WFMS should implements, modeling the business processes, supporting automation and continues improvement and passing various messages according to user defined business rules are most essential.With developing of business, WFMS need better ability to satisfy the requirement today, distributed architecture in workflow become a new hotspot in researching. Because this architecture supports several workflow engines, problems, such as the communications among systems, schedule of resource etc, become very complex.On the basic of web service architectures, we propose web service based workflow management, which is advanced in loose-couple, low cost, high integration ability, etc. The main topic of this paper is about the architecture of the web service based workflow, workflow meta-model, engines scheduling of the activities and transactions scheduling.At first, a systematic survey of Workflow Management research is given, and then the study objectives of this thesis are presented. Secondly, we introduce distributed workflow managements' architectures and point out their excellence and shortcomings. Then propose the characteristics of distributed technique abreast of the times. Then we fully introduce the brand-new distributed architecture-Web Service.In the 3rd chapter, we discuss the flexible workflow model. Based on the design ideas and principles, we put forward our meta-model, which includes core model, relating model. The core model consists of process model and data model. The relating model consists of temporal model, resource model and organization model.The information between enterprises and clients becomes a great deal, so how to improve the workflow capacity is important. This paper use grid technique to resolve this problem.Workflow application system need to deal with lots of information, so distributed engines construction and dynamic scheduling algorithm is provided to solve the network block and keep balance. In the end, in order to deal with workflow's transaction, workflow transaction model is provided and traditional tow-stage lock protocol is extended, so system consistency state can be keep by rollback operationand compensation transaction.
