Now workflow has been widely deployed in many enterprises to manage their business processes as a key technology of process definition, management and monitoring. Workflow management systems(WFMSs) are most used in every process to manage enterprise business combined with Enterprise Business Process Reengineering(BPR) and carry out automation of enterprise process. Workflow systems now face a difficulty that most workflow management systems (WFMS) only support few enterprises' existing applications and this problem has been the supreme bottleneck. Without uniform standard of integration, deployments of WFMS must be limited by exterior applications. So bringing a new application-independent integration framework forward becomes an urgent affair of WFMS.We import Web Service and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) into the reference model of WfMC and introduce our extended workflow model that can support Web Service and other heterogeneous applications. A workflow engine - WED-Flow based on the extended workflow model and its deployment into the Management Information System of a virtual enterprise are also presented. The framework of this paper is listed below:In the 1st chapter, we outline the main idea of workflow and some important technologies mentioned in this paper, try to make our reader get basic knowledge of workflow technology's development, deployment and some other important technologies. In the 2st chapter, we introduce the architecture of WED-Flow. First of all typical distributed workflow systems are introduced and analyzed. Then standards of web service, EAI and their applications on distributed workflow system are also presented. At last we summarize our distributed workflow engine--WED-Flow.In the 3st chapter, we first introduce workflow meta-model. Then the workflow extend model defined by our WED-Flow engine is presented. The core component of our extend model will be outlined. In this chapter we import Web Service and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) into the reference model of WfMC and introduces our extended workflow model that can support Web Service and other heterogeneous applications. In the 4st chapter, we bring the basic framework of transaction management and engine scheduling of WED-Flow forward combining researching achievements of workflow systems' transaction management and engine scheduling. In this charter weintroduce the transaction management of our system at first and then our engine's scheduling algorithm is presented. In the 5st chapter, based on our extend model and project requirement, we present our application system prototype deployed in the information platform and analyze it. How to carry out a real process is shown at last.In the end, all of the works in this dissertation are summed up, and their futures are prospected.
