Workflow is a full or half automation on business process, which is supported by the computer technology. It is concerned with the automation of procedure where documents, information or tasks are passed among participants according to the defined set of rules to achieve or contribute to achieve an overall business goal, and usually used in core application of the enterprise such as ERP, CRM & BPM.As a non-profit international workflow management organization, the WfMC (Workflow Management Coalition) was founded in 1993, which identified that the workflow has entered a well-rounded time. To implement the interoperation of different vendor's product, WfMC made a series specification in terminology, glossary, architecture and API.A workflow engine is responsible for part (or all) of the runtime control environment within an enactment service.Typically such software provides facilities to handle: Interpretation of the process definition; Control of process instances creation, activation, suspension, termination, etc;Navigation between process activities, which may involve sequential or parallel operations, deadline;interpretation of workflow relevant data, etc;an interface to support user interactions;Maintenance of workflow control data and workflow relevant data, passing workflow relevant data to/from applications or users;An interface to invoke external applications and link any workflow relevant data;Supervisory actions for control, administration and audit purposesThis context summarizes the main work during the WFMS's research and design time, puts forward a new project based on object-oriented and component programming technology, then designs it. The system based on the 3-tier structure and distributed components technology—CORBA and EJB, and implement the middle tier to manage the database.
