Optical switch is a key component that can switch or make on-off of the light path inall optical fiber communication networks, it is widely used in both Time DivisionMultiplexing (TDM) system and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system.Optical switches can realize the function of Optical Cross Communication (OXC) andOptical Add or Drop Multiplexing (OADM) in the node of networks. In this paper, a 1*4 Mechanical-optical Switch component was systematicallystudied, analyzed, designed and manufactured. The manufacture and assembly process ofoptical switch was improved in this paper. It shows that the Insertion Loss and Crosstalkof the component are better than that of others provided by other companies. The maincontent of this thesis is composed of five parts as the following: The market foreground , applieations, types and characteristics of optical switchcomponents were presented firstly in chapter 1. A general overview of researchprogresses and the key techniques about optical switches were introduced. In chapter 2, The light transmitting in collimating and coupling system were studiedtheoretically for C-lens based collimator. Parameters of C-lens and Return Loss incollimator were also obtained in this chapter. The excess loss due to the misalignment ofcoupling system was studied , providing theoretical fundmental for the manufacturing ofthe optical switch components. In chapter 3, the optical switch component was made up of three parts : as couplingsystem , light transmitting design and circuit design. And each component in opticalswitch module, such as C-lens ,prism were discussed, analyzed and calculated. Finally aswitch sample , which meet specifications , was designed by integrating the three parts. . In chapter 4, the manufacture and assembly process was introduced. And Parametermeasurement , devices and methods in production of components were also discussed. We manufactured the samples of 1×4 Mechanical-Optical Switch. The testing result for IIsamples shows that it has good performance, and all the specifications are meet therequest of anticipative design. The thesis is summarized in chapter 4.
