With the application of Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Distributed FeedBack Laser Diode (DFB LD) in high-speed optical communication systems, the narrower the linewidth of a laser diode, the more sensitive to backreflection it is. If a component reflects too much light back to the laser transmitter, the performance of communication systems will be degraded. Therefore, return loss measurements on such components become more and more important in R&D and manufacturing.The thesis describes the principle of optical return loss measurement and analyzes the way how to design it. The design technique of optical return loss measurement based on optical continuous-wave reflectometry is introduced emphatically. This paper then analyzes error sources of optical return loss measurement and provides the methods of decreasing measurement error. The main technical specifications and test methods have been provided, optical return loss measurement can range up to 70dB. The meter is equipped with a optical powermeter module, so it can measure the insertion loss of fiber components simultaneously, and can be used as a optical source or optical powermeter individually. The meter is easy to use with high performance and low price. It is a best choose for research and production in fiber components.
