Semantic mapping is a fundamental problem for information integration. As XML has been the de facto standard of data representation and exchange in the Web and people have also found efficient ways to convert relation data to XML, XML data semantic mapping becomes a research hotspot. In this paper, we first define what is semantic mapping. On the basis of describing how to do the mapping in the structural facet and discussing the possibility of using the ontology technology to map between XML data sources, we propose a hybrid approach to XML data semantic mapping. On considering of XML semantic, we introducte the concept of Semantic Web and concentrates the research on the RDFS layer and Ontology layer of the Semantic Web model. Through reviewing of the basic attributes and formal formats of RDF and RDFS, we describe the methods for the construction of XML ontology by using OWL and analyze the characteristic and superiority of each method. After this, the paper makes a comparison of RDFS and OWL in detail to illustrate the relationship between them. In considering of the limitation of semantic expression ability of XML and the need of semantic information in ontology construction, this paper proposes an approach to extracting standard RDFS Notation3 semi-automatically from XML documents.this paper also introduces a mapping framework called MAFRA and relevant mechanisms in OWL.Finally, a realistic information integration system based on XML Semantic Mapping and related technology is proposed. We believe that the research of this paper is significant to the development of Semantic Web.
