Vehicle Monitoring System (VMS) is a typical system of integration of GIS, space positioning technology and wireless communication technology. With the rapid development of science and technology, the vehicle monitoring system is updating constantly. The vehicle monitoring system based on GIS/GPS/GPRS is one that adopts GIS as the information system platform, GPS as vehicle positioning means and GPRS as wireless data transmission means. This paper has studied the vehicle monitoring system and its relevant technologies on the basis of previous research results, and its main content is summed up as follows:(1) This paper compares the positioning means and transmission means that can be adopted in a vehicle monitoring system, and then purposes to select GIS/GPS/GPRS technology to integrate the vehicle monitoring system. Because the vehicle monitoring system adopts GPRS as wireless data transmission means, the mobile terminals can fully access Internet and overcome the shortcomings that the SMS can transmit text data but can not transmit multi-media data.(2) Map-matching plays an essential role in the vehicle monitoring system. This paper analyzes the given source of errors of map matching and then introduces a weight-based map-matching algorithm. The algorithm converts GPS data into weight of arcs of road network and then decides the road on which the vehicle is moving according to the weight of the arcs. The algorithm can effectively make use of current information and historical information of GPS points, and can greatly reduce the influence on map matching which caused by inaccurate GPS data. The algorithm's principle is simple and it is easy to realize.(3) On the basis of relevant theoretical research, the whole architecture of the vehicle monitoring system is designed, and some software modules of the control center have been realized.
