The definition of embedded system is a special computer system which is designed for especial applications based on computer technology. Its software and hardware can be customized to fulfil the requirements of functions, reliability, costs, etc.Embedded systems originated from the singlechip technology in 1980s. With the development of Internet in 1990s, comes the post-pc era. Most of the systems are asked for more requirements of network based on TCP/IP protocols and powerful calculating capability. So they need more powerful processor and its compatible operating system, such as Linux which can supports the embedded systems perfectly. Furthermore, it is urgent to ask for the requirement of real time for the systems working in the real time environment. After making some researches on Linux and RTLinux, I implemented an embedded system based on Linux. It抯 a Webserver with basic functions. Users can browse its contents from Internet with any browsers. I modified the kernel of Linux with RTLinux in order to make it realtimed. In addition, the boot codes are also modified to suit the a DOC chip(8M) so that the system needn抰depend on the disks. Comparing with some boot method of Linux, I chose the LoadLin command for its advantages.Above all, the history and development of embedded systems are introduced at the beginning of this thesis. Having compared several Operating Systems, I chose Linux as its software development platform. Then RTLinux was introduced to solve the intrinsic limitation of Linux about real time, focusing on its principles and the method of developing program. At last, I described the processes and steps of developing embedded systems based on RTLinux and DOC chip in detail.
