The Analysis Of Embedded Linux Kernel And The Reserch Of Application On Multimedia Set-Top-Box

With the advancement of the digital information technology and network technology, the products of embedded system have already widely been used in many aspects of society. As Linux operating system has a great deal of advantages, it is one of the present technological focuses to transform Linux to an embedded operating system, and to apply it to the embedded products. Represented as information household appliances, technique of the multimedia set-top-box is advanced. There are many advantages of applying embedded Linux operating system to the multimedia set-top-box, such as cutting down the costs, simplifying the procedure of developing and improving systematic performance. It is a development trend to apply embedded Linux operating system in set-top-box in the future.This paper introduces the study and practice in the fields of embedded Linux operating system and set-top-box during the period of my working at master thesis. Firstly, the paper briefly summarizes the history and development situation of embedded system and Linux. After analyzing Linux kernel in depth, the thesis discusses a typical embedded Linux—uClinux, including the kernel technology, the basic sequence of porting, and method of programming. The real-time transforming is the other concern target of embedded Linux. Thirdly, two kind of real-time Linux embedded systems—RTLinux and RTAI are introduced respectively in the paper. A profound research about their kernel structures and the realization mechanisms has been done. The real-time capability of RTLinux is tested in paper, which is a main work of the thesis. Then the thesis summarize set-to-box, including its function, the kind, key technology. Finally the paper put forward a scheme of the multimedia set-top-box, whose hardware is based on S3C2800 CPU and S5H2010 MPEG-2 decoder chipset produced by Samsung Corporation. The software system is constituted by embedded Linux operating system. Some typical application programs are discussed, for instance MiniGUI, EPG, stock market securities software.
