In order to acquire the decision support in Opencast Mining, the geological structures of open-pit mine is expect to understand and grasp at any time. But data analyzed have been resorted to 2D approach in the current GIS system; there is a lack of ability in 3D Visualization. It can't reproduce the geographical environment directly, completely and accurately, which makes the GIS system's practical value received very great restriction. With the development of virtual reality techniques, a new method was bought forward which is to apply the Virtual Reality (VR) technology to GIS.Based on recent development in GIS system and virtual reality technology, according to the actual requirement, Open Pit GIS System based on Virtual Reality Technique is designed. By the means of using the technical of virtual reality, this GIS system for mine can express the geographical information data of mine in multi-dimension. Virtual Reality promises an environment, which fully engages user senses and provides full interactivity in real time. This system adds an important freedom for the user to visualize and interpret geographical data more effectively.This dissertation focused on the research and experiment work in the following aspects. (1) the design and implementation of Open Pit GIS System . (2) the 3D Geosciences Model of open pit and the corresponding algorithm. (3) the implement of VR technology in GIS system.At last, based on the researched of the above problematic situation, Open Pit GIS system has been developed using OpenGL. The software has been applied to Wugang Daye Mine, and obtained excellent effect.
