3D visualization for geological information is employed to set up the digital model of geological characteristics by appropriate data structures and with computer visualization technology the digital description is expressed vividly. With the rapid development of computer technologies and virtual reality technology, and the further study on geosciences, 3D visualization for geological information has became one of the most important aspects in area of mathematical geology,geotechnical engineering,engineering geology and computer science ect. interdisciplinary area.Based on the research on key techniques of 3D visualization for engineering geologic information, some key problems existing in the 3D engineering geosciences modeling and visualization technology are discussed in this paper, which are mainly including several aspects listed below:(1)This paper discusses some commonly used 3D spatial data model, by comparing their advantages and disadvantages 3D geosciences modeling, chosen multi-DEMs model, and introduced the process of establishing stratum based on this model;(2)In view of the difficulty to construct a relative accurate and integrates model by using original exploration data, this paper used kriging interpolation method to interpolate the discrete exploration data and formed regular grid data, and then turn into triangular gird. By this method, constructed DEM model have a little memory space and simple data structure, established 3D geosciences models more precise.(3)Through dissection we can clearly understanding the internal structure, but commonly used methods are too complex. This paper implemented 3D stratum cutting by additional clipping planes, stencil buffer technology of OpenGL and feedback array, this method is easy to realize and fast;(4)According to the method system of engineering geosciences modeling and visualization which was established in the paper, and with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 development platform, combined with OpenGL, by ADO component connected with SQL Sever2000 database, used multi-DEMs model construct 3D stratum modeling, developed 3D visualization system for engineering geologic information. This system has realized management of engineering information and geologic exploration data,3D visualization for geologic information, and 3D stratum cutting and so on. By connecting with database, picking out data which related to establishing geologic model, the system realized real time modeling of geologic data and dynamic updating of model;The system is applied to 3D geosciences modeling and analysis of the first stage extension project of TianJin institute of urban construction, practice verified that basal theory is feasible, and further perfect basal theory on practice.
