The field of digital signal processing has spurred developments from basic theory of discrete-time signals to diverse applications in telecommunications, speech and acoustics, radar, and video. Speech acquisition and processing are one of the important research aspects. Until now, it has formed several research branches, such as speech analysis, speech enhancement, speech recognition and speech communication, etc. The practice of theories in these fields requires high performance processors. General-purpose microprocessors such as the Intel x86 family are not ideally suited to numerically intensive tasks. DSP (digital sigal processor) features Single-cycle multiply and accumulate (MAC), mutilple-accesss memory architecture, a wide variety of on-chip peripherals, which leads trend in digital speech processing field. This paper designs and implements a practical speech aquisiton and processing system based on DSP in the situation.Firstly, this article analysed the architecture of tms320c54x DSP, including center process unit (CPU), bus structrue, instruction system, addressing modes and on-chip peripherals, and compared it with the general-purpose processor. Secondly it demonstrated how to develop a practical speech signal aquistion and processing board based on tms320vc5402. Several important hardware modules, such as memory, CPLD, RS232, A/D and D/A module were discussed detailedly. Thirdly, summarized the flow chart of software development of tms320c54x DSP, focousing on how to program the CMD file and vector table file within your project. Then, gave two examples. One explained how to recieve and send data using tll6c750, the other demonstrated how to get data from the A/D module and how to send data to the D/A module The last part of the artichle provided some suggestions to improve the speech signal acquisition and processing system.
