These processes can be translated and executed among executants according to a set of process rules, documents,messages and tasks. The aim of workflow is improve work efficiency, reduce production cost, improve the level of production management and enhance enterprise competition ability, realize modern enterprise Business Process Re-engineering and business process automation. With information technology be researched and be applied broadly and deeply, as well as fast development of correlative technology (such as Media Ware, OOT, Network), now, it is enable to implement workflow management system. Through recently development and research, many prototypes or products of workflow have come forth and involved in every walk of life.The workflow technology was developed by companies, which develop the product of workflow. It achieved fast development while the good affect is achieved and is paid attention to by a lot of people in application. Compared to the prosperity of workflow products, the development of workflow theory is lagged. By now, there is no a set of maturity theory and method in the design method of workflow and the conception of workflow model.The main research in the theory and application of workflow include several aspects as below:(1) The system architecture of WFMS. (3) The transition character of workflow, researching how to implement the join of high level transition process technology and workflow management technology, how to improve correction and stabilization, so the complex business process can be supported better. (4) The implement technology of workflow, include OOT (Object Oriented Technology), Distributed system computing technology, personality user interface, message communication technology, Database technology, WWW etc.(5) The simulation and analysis of workflow.(6) Based workflow application integration, researching the integration of application system and interaction of different workflow system.(7) Reengineer of workflow and business process.(8) The application of workflow technology, research how to apply workflow in different domain.The research above can be concluded to three sections:(1) workflow theory, include the research of the architecture of workflow management system, model and definition language (The model method of workflow, the formal representation of workflow model, workflow definition language) etc. (2) The implement technology of workflow, include transition character of workflow, variety of advanced software application, simulation of workflow. These researches are in order to improve the performance of workflow management system, especially the system dependability and the capability of processing a large scale complex and parallel business flow. (3) The application of workflow, include application method, application software integration which using implement technology of workflow in different domain. These researches are in order to exert the advantages of workflow management system, and give an effective way to resolve idiographic problems.With the development of computer network technology and Internet application, workflow management system that base on WEB become more and more popular. As consistent and simple interface, span-platform, WEB technology make rapid progress. At the same time, the development of Internet and the construction of enterprise intranet gave people a perfect environment for synergic work, and make it possible to implement workflow management system base on WEB.
