| XML is a simple standard method to mark text data, it has the attributes of open, self-descriptive and cross-platform. So it is called "the ASCII code on Web". To apply XML in each layer of E-government system can provide not only solutions of a series core problem in E-government, but also the technical support of cross-operation with other fields. All of these require us to pay more attention to the application research of XML in E-government.With the background of the E-government system of the city of Ezhou, this paper focuses on how to apply the new technology of XML in application support layer of E-government effectively. We made thoroughly researches on the new thinking and new method of data presentation, data storage, data format transformation and data transmission with XML in the data exchange system. And designed a data exchange prototype system, in which the data transmitted with the form of XML.We achieved the works following:(1) This paper analyzed the requirement for data exchange system in practice. And designed a reasonable architecture of data exchange system fitted for E-government.(2) It researched deeply of the standard of XML technology, including of basic standard and practical standard. And discussed of XML's application mode in information system.(3) For E-government need, we proposed an XML-based data exchange prototype system, and analyzed the software realization method of it.(4) We discussed how to put XML technology into use in data exchange system.(5) At last, we give an example of XML-based data exchange prototype system.E-government is a systematic project, it is the crucial field in country'sinformational construction. So, the study of the application of XML inE-government has much meaning in theory and practice. The research in the paper has definite theoretic and practical value in the field of data exchange of information system. It is a useful reference for designing the data exchange platform of information system.
