The goal of a data integration platform is to provide a uniform interface to a multitude of data sources. Using the interface users don't need to consider the problem about model heterogeneity, data extracting and combination, etc..The problem of data integration is one of the ad hoc old problems in database community. But with the rising of XML technology, the problem becomes a research focus in this community.XML has emerged as the standard of meta language representing data format, and is continually applied to various domain to integrate data sources. It is rich, clear, extensible and self-description. All the advantages make it the best candidate for representing data model.This paper discusses the issue of integrating water resources data using XML based on extensive analysis and research work. It is focus on the problems related with heterogeneous data schema and query processing in water resources domain. We design the data integration platform framework based on analysis and comparing the existent data integration methods and the characteristics of architecture. Meanwhile, we discuss the main technologies. The main contributions of this paper are as follows:1. Presents a platform framework based on XML for data integration in water resources domain: This platform framework adopts Mediator-Wrapper architecture and takes virtual view method. In addition, using XML views for local data sources hides the local specificities of each system and enhances the transparency. Also, using the powerful universal query language for XML, i.e. XQuery, makes it possible to query XML global and local views in a uniform way based on a standard interface. Furthermore, the richness of the XML schema model simplifies wrapper mappings.2. Research on key technologies1) Schema integration: Schema integration is one of vital aspects in data integration, because we must resolve data confliction and provide a uniform and integrated data view. This paper improves on the existent methods of schema integration by analysis and comparing them and combining XML with them. Moreover, the global schema and mapping rules according to XML standard are generated.2) Query processing: This paper presents the process of query processing. It is focus on mapping XQuery into SQL and transforming the resulting tuples to XML.The significance of this paper is to implement the XML format views of RDBMS, and design a platform framework to provide a uniform query service for heterogeneous data sources. Our work can be used to build a uniform data accessing infrastructure in water resources domain.
