The technology of small target detection in infrared image sequences is the coretechnology in the system of infrared detection and tracking. And the detection of smalltarget is an important project in recent years. The current development trend is themethod with little operations, high performance, and which can be achieved byhardware in real time. Combined with many detection algorithms given by the former, the applications ofMarr method in small target detection are mainly discussed in this paper. It begins formthe discussion the knowledge of the gaussian filter and the laplacian operator, which arethe base of the Marr method. And it is followed by the detail discussion of such as: the2G(laplacian of gaussian) filter, the template LoG(laplacian of gaussian), the meaningof laplacian of gaussian in human vision, edge detection and neurophysiology. Withdifferent template to different size of target, the small target can be separated from thebackground by this small infrared target detection method. This method can overcomethe shortcoming that traditional filtering methods cannot distinguish between the noiseand edge signals of the infrared image. And it also can reserve closed edge of target. The real-time demand during the processing of detection can be well satisfied by thismethod through FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) device. Considering the application in engineering, this paper also gives the particulardesign idea and flow of this method's realization in FPGA device. Because of the abilityof FPGA in real-time processing and the consideration of the use of resource in FPGA,small infrared target can be detected in real-time by this method with FPGA device. Inthe end, the prospect of the project is as well presented.
