At present, USB 2.0 has been widely accepted as standard of personal computer and peripheral devices which has been applied into various kinds of devices. Comparing to other communication interface, the most advantages of USB interface is its fast speed, feasibility, Plug and Play supporting, and automatic configuration. Many multinational companies have developed USB terminal controller several years ago, while home research on the terminal controller is rare but most limited in the USB driver development. This thesis introduces USB2.0 Device Controller IP core for FPGA designs. In this paper, the background of USB bus is firstly introduced, as well as its advantages. Then, the architectural overview of USB2.0 protocol is discussed. After analyzing the USB Device Controller function requirements, the thesis divides the system into several sub-modules by the way of TOP-DOWN. Every module is described by hardware description language Verilog HDL and simulated. At last, the system is synthesized and placed and layout by Quartus II, and uses FPGA to implement the design. In conclusion, the USB2.0 Device Controller IP core is verified under PC's plug and play.
