As the 3rd generation computer-assisted digital measurement and testing instrumentation, virtual instrument is the outcome accomplished with the development of electronics technology, measurement and testing technology, and computer technology, moving toward bus and driver standardization, programming platform graphics, hardware and software modularization, and hardware plug and play. This paper, taking the oil cooler heat transfer characteristics measurement test-bed as the research object, studies the theory and technology regarding virtual instrument, and develops the date collection system using Visual C.Firstly, the history, state of the art and existing problems of virtual instrument is presented. Then this paper discusses the hardware, software architecture, reusability, interchangeability of virtual instrument and interchangeable virtual instrument, compares parallel, serial and field bus. The SCPI and VISA structure, and IVI based instrument development are also discussed in detail. The VI software technology, the component technology basic principle, virtual instrument software system strongpoint are studied. Visual C is used to develop IV based ActiveX control, and data collecting system, which applies SCPI instruction and IVI software layered model to communication and control between MCU and DAQ. Multi-thread technology is used to collect data from different signals, mobile filtering algorithm is used in data filer, and COM technology and related control is used in data visualization. It is practically proved that virtual instrument can be easily put into practice, provide a friendly human-machine interface, promptly data processing, easily operated virtual instrument system, enhance the operation efficiency of the test-bed.
