With the development of the knowledge economy, the people's requirements to the all kinds of information are increasing gradually. Especially, the development and popularization of Internet are changing the people's life. But the intrinsic way of the Internet by wire confines the accessing and using of the network information. The mobile communication breaks the general contact between the position and the means of communication, which provide the possibility to communicate the information timely and conveniently. The combination of means of mobile communication and the resource of the Internet information is the important direction and focus of development in the domain of the current mobile communication and information. One of such technologies is introduced: Mobile IP-based DECT system, which promotes information services and the access ability to Internet over wireless communication networks. Researching the integration of DECT with the Internet is important due to the continuing phenomenal popularity of the Internet and wireless communications, and ubiquity of DECT systems, which will contribute to impulse the application and development of the wireless access technology in our country.Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) is a general radio access technology standardized by the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI), which is for short range wireless communications, so that it can be interfaced to a large number of local and public networks such as Internet, PSTN, X.25, etc.DECT can be interfaced to the Internet to provide seamless access. The interconnection of DECT to Internet is, however, inadequate to support wide-area mobility because the Internet is based on the Internet Protocol (IP), which does not facilitate host mobility between different subnetworks. To solve this problem, Mobile IP was used because it is a standard developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to support mobile computing. This paper investigates the interworking of DECT with Mobile IP to support subnet-level mobility, while DECT is employed for user mobility within a subnet. To achieve an efficient interworking, mobility management features of both DECT and Mobile IP are exploited. By taking advantage of the mobility features of DECT which offers faster convergence and far fewer overheads, the handover latency of the DECT-Mobile IP system and frequency of Mobile IP signaling over the radio link canbe reduced. The necessary protocol protocol signalling for the DECT-Mobile IP interworking mobility management procedures is defined. Finally, a modification to Mobile IP route algorithm in the DECT-Mobile IP system is suggested, wherein IP packets intended for the mobile host travel shorter routes in certain situations, resulting in lesser delay.
