Intelligent Buildings (IB) as an integration of multiple sciences and technologies, such as architecture science, control technology, computer and communication techniques, and management science, have become an important part in the information infrastructure in cities. Design and Engineering issues pertinent to IB have drawn much attention from city planners, manufactures, and investors. This dissertation is dedicated to design and engineering issues relevant to the sub-system of an IB system, i.e. the Security Automation System (SAS), based on the experience gained in the IB project of Huhehot Municipal Government Building. There are three approaches towards the security issues: manpower protection (e.g. security guards), technical protection which depends heavily on modern techniques and equipment, and physical protection (e.g. with strengthened structure or materials of a building). The work presented in this dissertation is devoted to technical protection techniques and devices.Chapter 1 of this dissertation provides a background study to techniques of Intelligent Buildings and puts the Security Automation System (SAS) in the context of IB systems. Chapter 2 deals with the design issues of the SAS. It started with a brief introduction to SAS, and through the requirement analysis to the SAS of Huhehot Municipal Government Building, a SAS design for this building is provided. Chapter 3 deals with the engineering issues of the SAS, such as equipment installation, debugging, and system certification. Finally, provides a forward view of the SAS.
