With the great development of wireless communication technology and Internet, VoIP over wireless network is widely used. Providing QoS guarantees for VoIP applications is increasingly important, especially in mobile/wireless networks due to their limited bandwidth and mobility. However, the current researches on QoS of Mobile/Wireless network mainly focus on theoretical model and protocol design, there is no detailed research on transit performance of VoIP application over actual mobile/wireless network. This paper does research on transit performance of VoIP over actual mobile/wireless network. First, a new approach for measuring the QoS parameters of VoIP applications over wireless network is introduced to do actual measurement and analysis. Based on the results in various network scenarios, the measuring methodology is proved to be correct. Second, with the implemented measuring tool, actual measurements are conducted. By comparing the performance of VoIP in different mobile/wireless network scenarios, strategies to improve QoS for VoIP in mobile/wireless networks are discussed, and DiffServ is introduced to provide QoS. This paper will fill the blank of research on transit performance of VoIP application over actual mobile/wireless network, and give a good reference for further research on providing QoS in wireless network. The rest of this paper is organized as follows. In Section 1, the relevant knowledge about VoIP, Mobile IPv6 and QoS are presented. Section 2 begin to introduce the measuring methodology, a new clock calibration algorithm is introduced as well. In Section III, various network topologies and scenarios are described; results and analyses are also given. An example of QoS mechanism, DiffServ, is investigated in Section IV to improve QoS for VoIP applications over mobile/wireless networks. Finally, Section V concludes the whole paper.
