Internet has been changing the mode of our learning and has been the important way of our getting information and settling problems which we faced. It was once our dream to accept the long-distant education as quickly as possible and, at the same time, to select an authoritative or an individual on-line test system according to the level of our learning. But the data information in traditional item bank is commonly stored as tables by a few types of relational databases. Even if the examination questions are stored in the same type of database, their modeling and structure have no uniform format standard in common, which leads to the difficulty of their visiting to each other. At the same time the dispersive repeating constitution of many small-scale item banks has caused the redundancy of many resources. Besides, the quality of the examination questions in many item banks can not be assured according to the lack of uniform management, which led to the difficulty of selecting a high-quality and intellectualized paper from so many item databases. All these problems show that the traditional software of item bank has being out of season and the distributed item bank system that based on network in order to realize limitless share of sources (at lest in theory so ) has been springing up with the development of the popularization of network and the research of distributed calculation. Compared to the traditional item bank, distributed item bank has been becoming more and more decentralized, structural and synergic. To these isomerous test resources, the primary task is to optimizing them and making the uniform format standardization to all of them. In other words, it is necessary to transfer these resources to a uniform, simple, extensible and independent-of-system "universal language". The extensible marked language (XML) is competent for the task. Using XML as the medium of structure-marking, transmitting and transforming, we can share the network education resources in the largest extension. To carry out the intention above, in this paper, we put forward a framework of distributed item bank system based on XML, which makes full use of the XML 's character of standard, simple, self-description and extensible. Besides its data layer uses the method of modeling based on XML. Furthermore, how to access data quickly and consultative (for example how to read, write, transfer and store XML document) is the key of which we take care. Compare to traditional item bank, this system's structure, function and the principle of running has also been improved greatly.
