The rising demand of large-scale urban environment modeling in movie background and PC game scenes has drawn the attention of many professionals. The common requirements to the modeler are:(1) most of the models can be developed automatically,(2) the buildings and objects in the scene are able to follow a certain style and able to distinguish from each other at several aspects:geometry and texture appearance,(3) the model complexity should be suitable in case that the model is too complicated to render or too simple and lack of verisimilitude.Many ancient towns,streets or blocks are well reserved in the water country of south east China. He Fang Street in Hangzhou,the Capital of South Song dynasty,was a large commercial street in the past several hundred years. Xitang,a small town nears the river net,reserved blocks of residential houses of the ancient time. This paper gives some discussion on fast modeling of vernacular houses of south east China from several functional components such as gate window wall or shop wall and roof. Moreover,the permutation of houses in an environment is also discussed in this paper.Based on the house functional components analysis,we build a hierarchy of all the components. For example,gate,window and wall can be organized as gate window wall;gate window wall or shop wall,conjunct wall and roof can be organized as house,etc. From the components hierarchy,we give out a series of algorithms on components style selection and construction. We also define a set of coordinate rules on how to calculate the location of each component. Furthermore,we use two words patch and block to describe the relationship between houses and give out the patch separation and house construction algorithm.The fourth chapter of this paper describes the final representation of our urban model:VRML(Virtual Reality Modeling Language),hi this chapter,we describe the basic concepts of VRML and the nodes used in our system. Moreover,we give out a series of classes to facilitate the transmission,operation and I/O of VRML messages.
