MPEG is applied extensively as a general international standard for moving picture and associative audio. These standards, such as VCD standard based on MPEG-i, DVD standard and DVB standard based on MPEG-2, brought a far- reaching revolution in the fields of digital AV and multimedia. In this paper, research on data storage technology and data compression technology based on MPEG are discussed, with the background of the project ──"Research on storage technology for AV data streams in AVD video disc". which is a sub-project for new generation of high-density laser video disc system. Firstly, the analysis of algorithms for data storage in the existing applied standards is presented. The emphases of this paper are paid to research of multiplexing AV data using transport streams, which is the core problem of storage technology in AVD system. Then an improved multiplexing algorithm for AVD is proposed with experimental demonstration. From both macroscopical and microcosmic profile, this algorithm guarantees synchronization of AV data stored in TS packets after being multiplexed. Following is software simulation by using Visual C++ on the win98 platform. In the development of this software, the object-oriented property of Visual C++ and windows?property of supporting multi-thread programming arc made full use of to simulate hardware complementation well by software. Finally, with regard to the necessary video compression part in AVD system, the idea of applying advanced video compression scheme based on wavelet transform to AVD system is explored. This work is also based on analysis of experiment results. Transport streams generated by simulating software of this project completely fulfils the requirement which the transport streams system target decoder gives storing method for AV data storage. At same time, this sample stream also fulfils all other requirement of this project. What's more, the algorithm given by this paper has the advanced property of being able to be applied in variable bit rate system.
