Presently, the reform of Chinese courses, as one of the important constituting parts of the whole reform, receives much attention. Today's reform of courses is based on previous generations' efforts, summary of which can facilitate our progress in this field. The educationist Duan Lipei was a thinker, and a doer as well. He stressed the instrumentality of Chinese, and its humanism as well, respecting students-centered status. During his leading Yucai Middle School, in addition to the adoption of teaching materials issued by Ministry of Education, he employed the Chinese classics as his self-edited teaching materials. He put forward "Sixteen-character Guideline" of "accord with teaching materials, integrate teaching and practicing, relate new to old, adopt aptitudes-based teaching", and proposed teaching methods of "reading, discussing, practicing and delivering" and delivering several texts at one time. Meanwhile, he also carried out a series of reformations in exam methods. The reform of Chinese courses in Yucai Middle School stirred a sensation then, and still has a great reference for today's reform. "One-outline-multiple-texts", school-based curriculum development, and the study method of "independence, cooperation and research" advocated today are embodied in Yucai's practice. This paper attempts to systematically summarize and analyze Mr. Duan's educational thought and the practice of Chinese courses' reform in Yucai Middle School, and tries to explore the enlightening significance to today's reform of Chinese courses. The purpose of this research aims to absorb the previous generations' experience, and enhance students' Chinese attainments in an all-round way.
