With the development of globalization and China's economy, the mastery of a foreign language is becoming more and more important. In early 2001, the Ministry of Education demanded that English should be taught from the third year in primary schools of all cities and counties in China. Since 2001, offering English course in primary schools has become a policy and tendency. Up till now, English course has been taught for more than 6 years in primary schools. How is English taught in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region? What problems are met with in the process of teaching English in primary schools? In order to find out the answers, a survey of English teaching in the primary schools in the city of Guigang will be carried out.Guigang is selected as the object of the survey for having a lot in common with many of the other areas in Guangxi. It is a middle-sized city in the southeast of Guangxi. Compared with the large cities Nanning, Liuzhou and Guilin, Guigang is much smaller in size and less developed in economy and culture. Among the whole population of 4.7million, about 17% are minority nationalities and most of its population are in rural areas. So the survey will show us the situation of English teaching in the primary schools in most areas in Guangxi. In other words, it will also help us learn more about English teaching in primary schools in Guangxi in an all-round perspective. At the same time, some possible ways to deal with the problems in the teaching are offered in the thesis, which may have the significance of being used as reference to other areas in Guangxi. It is also expected that a little help will be given to the English teaching in primary schools in the cities and other areas. Moreover, it may be used as reference for the education department of government to make decisions.In order to learn about the actualities of the primary English teaching in Guigang, the author carried out a survey of the primary English teaching. In the investigation, questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation were employed to collect data about English course offered, teachers, teaching materials, teaching equipment and so on. Through data analysis, the author has got an insight into the present situation of primary English teaching in Guigang in an all-round perspective. And according to the existing problems, some advice was put forward to solve the issues and improve the English teaching in primary schools.The thesis can be divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the value and history of English teaching, and the aims and significance of the research. Chapter 2 discusses the basic linguistic theories of primary English teaching. Chapter 3 presents the English teaching situation, achievements and problems of Guigang, and at the same time, analyzes the reasons leading to English teaching problems. Chapter 4 focuses on the improvement of primary English teaching. The last chapter draws a conclusion. |
