The open examination questions of physics in middle school (OEQPMS), as a new type of questions emerging during the process of curriculum reform, have been attracting increasing attention with the in-depth reform of curriculum in that they can better meet the requirements of new curriculum than the traditional close questions. Systematic research, however, has almost not been done about the OEQPMS due to its appearance in just the past few years and most middle school physics teachers are actually strange to the functions as well as the compilation of OEQPMS, which prevent the application and development of OEQPMS from going forward. The paper first expounds the background of the emergence of OEQPMS, and then sums up the basic features (openness, originality, truthfulness and comprehensiveness) of OEQPMS on the basis of analysis of the current OEQPMS. The author goes on to argues for the major functions of OEQPMS, i.e. it will be conducive to the evaluation of knowledge and skill, process and method as well as the emotions, attitude and values, and to the full development of students in terms of these aspects. At last the principles of compilation and conventional methods of OEQPMS are presented, i.e. development, extensiveness, construction, mainstay and variety. And the author puts forward two creative approaches of compiling OEQPMS, that is, rewriting the traditional exam questions and compiling new ones.
