The relationship between teaching and research is an eternal subject of universities. Its characteristics vary with the times, the environments and the individuals. With the expansion of the higher education scale at the age of popularization, social put forward to new request for teaching and research. Universities have come face to face with the double pressure of quantity and quality, and the old elite education models have also undergone unprecedented challenges. Therefore, studying on relationship of teaching and research has both theoretical and practical significance. As the mainstream of the higher education at the age of popularization, the undergraduate universities face the embarrassment of the relationship between teaching and research as well. Based on above the factors, the thesis regarded Hunan University of Science and Technology as a case study, and employed questionnaire survey, documents gathering, meeting attending, personal interview and so on.This thesis aimed to probe into the relationships between the teaching and research. Both qualitative approach and quantitative approach were involved to analyze status in quo and reasons for Hunan University of Science and Technology in order to hunt after strategy about settling a question. This thesis consists of four parts:The first part is introduction. It introduced the reasons why this thesis had come into being, especially the ones why Hunan University of Science and Technology was chosen as a study case;then it summarized the background, mainly the characteristics of the higher education and the present situation of the relationship between teaching and research at the age of popularization;after summarizing the achievements in scientific research into the relationship between teaching and research, the study data and method were illuminated and the innovative points were put forth.The second part is the survey of the teaching and scientific research of Hunan University of Science and Technology. It first gave a general introduction of the situation of the teaching and research of Hunan University of Science and Technology and the causing factors. It then introduced thesituation of teaching and scientific research and policies about coordinate the relationship between them. The teaching situation was mainly reflected by the teaching notion, the teaching construction and management, and the teaching investment, and so on. The research was mainly embodied by scientific achievements and scientific policies. It also analyzed the policies by which teaching and research were coordinated.The third part was the exploration of the relationship between teaching and research of Hunan University of Science and Technology. Employed the quantitative and qualitative approaches, the present situations and its causes of teaching and research of Hunan University of Science and Technology were analyzed systematically in this part. Investigation showed that the university was confronted with the double pressure of teaching and research;departments were mainly sites of conflict about teaching and research, which exhibited with time, content and apparatus related with teaching and research. Teachers behaved differently in their activities of teaching and research as result of different age, sexual, title of professional, school age, degree of branching, etc. The characteristics and causes varied from university, departments and individuals, etc. in Hunan University of Science and Technology.The fourth part was the suggestions and prospects of how to balance and co-ordinate the relationship between teaching and research. This part put forward to some suggestions as follows: to the university, it should renew the ideas about teaching and research, optimize the salary-policies and management mechanism, set teaching position and research position respectively, put a premium on the position shift between teaching and research to promote the division of labor and communication of teaching and research of inside and outside the university. To the department, it should regulate the teaching management, and employ the secondary distributive pay-lever and the accordingly coordinating mechanism to promote the union of teaching and research. To the teachers, it should build full and perfect managing system, promote the teachers' fair play in scientific research, and strengthen the teachers' moral culture, etc.
