The Founding Of The Tsinghua Engineering School

In 1932, Tsinghua University founded the School of Engineering. Acolony studying abroad returned to china and formed the first faculty of theSchool of Engineering of Tsinghua University. On the basis of the GeneralEducation idea of Tsinghua University, the new requires of the society, andthe developing trend of the technology itself, the first faculty made theengineering learning the main rhythm of the Tsinghua Engineering School,andpractised in their teaching and researching work.Through the research of the historical materials of the educational idea,teaching, outlay, equipments, research work and so on, this paper considersthat, from the year of 1932 when it was founded, untill the year of 1937, theTsinghua Engineering School had built up a suit of new subjects at that timewhich were urgently required for the development and national defence ofChina. And a new system of the curriculum emphasizing the importance ofmastering the universal principle of the engineering science was set up. And aseries of laboratories which were at a high class at that time were built. Underall those condition, the faculty did some valuable research work and organizedacademies of engineering science. And more, they continued their researchwork began abroad and even some of their research work formed a part of theacademic authority all through the world at that time.At last, this paper drew a conclusion that, comparing with the 1920s, theengineering education of 1930s got a great improvement. And in this period,the triditional technology education turned to engineering science educationin china and the founding of the Tsinghua Engineering School could be lookedas a new milestone in the process of the transplanting of the technology fromthe west to China.
