The new round of experiments in reform of courses in senior middle schools have been developed in some provinces in China, and such reform will be carried out in 2007 in all senior middle schools in Gansu Province. Inquiry learning is a learning method proposed in this reform, with which our teaching goals and learning methods will change. In such situation, inquiry-based teaching arouses many educators' interest and attention. However, in theory and practice, there is controversy abroad and at home about inquiry-based teaching employed in senior middle schools. Though many scholars argue in favor of it, other scholars query it with sound reasons. So we should give enough attention to theoretical study of it and put it into practice.By means of investigation and experiment, this thesis studies the implement of inquiry-based teaching in senior middle schools, especially in teaching biology in senior middle schools. This thesis makes a deep investigation of teachers' and students' cognition of inquiry-based teaching and learning from the following four aspects: the basis for carrying out inquiry-based teaching, students' current inquiry learning, teachers' understanding of inquiry-based teaching, and the influence of carrying out inquiry-based teaching in teaching and learning biology in senior middle schools on students' grades, initiative, self-confidence and potential in their learning.The study finally indicates that there is good basis for development of inquiry-based teaching in senior middle schools, though students' current inquiry learning and teachers' cognition of inquiry-based teaching are not ideal. The abovementioned four aspects have been improved since inquiry-based teaching was adopted in teaching biology in senior middle schools. Therefore, it is quite necessary and feasible to develop inquiry-based teaching in teaching and learning biology in senior middle schools.
