The concepts of function are central questions in modern mathematics, and take very important place in mathematics field. They are not only parts of the most important mathematics teaching content, but also difficult to master for the students in ordinary senior middle school. The objective of this study is to analyze the understanding level of function concepts in ordinary senior middle school students and to explore the law of the understanding level of function concepts. What's more, we hope to offer some valuable suggestions to teachers and students for teaching and learning in ordinary senior middle school. In this research, we choose 1483 students randomly from four ordinary senior middle schools in the city of Chang Chun as sample, and analyze their understanding level of function concepts. Among them, there are 510 students from grade one, 491 students from grade two, 482 students from grade three. According to the Mathematics Teaching Standard of senior middle school and some suggestions from several experts and senior teachers, we divide the understanding level into four levels——level A, level B, level C and level D. Level A is higher than level B, which is higher than level C, which is higher than level D (For details see Part 2 of this paper). In this study, questions compiled by researchers were used, collective test was selected, and some students were interviewed in order to get their true thoughts. All date were analyze statistically. At last, the understanding level of function concepts in ordinary senior middle school students and its law were opened out. The study showed that: Students from ordinary senior middle school grade one, 31.09% of them achieve level A, 28.83% of them achieve level B, 11.16% of them are at level C, 28.92% of them are at level D; Students from ordinary senior middle school grade two, 7.15% of them achieve level A, 20.92% of them achieve level B, 23.09% of them are at level C, 48.84% of them are at level D; Students from ordinary senior middle school grade three, 34.26% of them achieve level A, 26.87% of them achieve level B, 14.17% of them are at level C, 24.70%of them are at level D. In all, the understanding level of function concepts in ordinary senior middle school grade three students is higher than that of grade one students, which is higher than that of grade two students. The result showed that, for ordinary senior middle school students, the understanding level of function concepts is not deep enough, and there are certain spatial between understanding and wielding function concepts.
