New Curriculum Standard for English Teaching in China requires teachers to change the traditional teaching methods and students to improve their learning by adopting "self-regulated learning" methods. It also emphasizes that English teaching should focus on whole person education instead of English language only. So students should be provided with more time and chances to learn and think by themselves. Self-regulated teaching model, which is constructed on the basis of the theory of the zone of proximal development, humanistic learning theories and constructive views of education, and on the basis of an investigation into the students' learning needs, is used to help students form a good habit of learning and improve their learning ability. The model consists of the following procedures. First, students are required to do preview work designed by teachers beforehand, and then they discuss with each other the difficulties they come across. After that students are asked to finish a test so that teachers can find their difficulties that still remain and then give relevant instructions. At last, students are given class work to consolidate what they have learned. The new model has been applied to teaching for an academic year. The results show that it is an effective way to stimulate the students' interest in learning English, to help the students form a good habit of self-learning, to develop the students' learning abilities, and to improve their learning results.
