Grammar teaching is a very controversial issue in foreign language teaching. Some schools of language teaching methodology lay much emphasis on it while other schools believe it is useless to teach grammar. So grammar teaching has gone through ups and downs. In abroad, grammar teaching was overlooked in 1980's. Before long people began to take interest in grammar teaching again. Grammar is no longer seen as a purely useless form, but a combination of structure, meaning and use. Now people believe grammar has much to do with phonology., vocabulary, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, etc.In china, communicative language teaching approach is widely used in ELT. Teachers of English are paying too much attention to communicative activities, so grammar teaching is somewhat overlooked. The result is that though their listening comprehension ability and their oral production ability have improved, students' abilities to read and write declined. So we mustn't give up English grammar teaching. What we should do is try to find efficient ways of grammar teaching to enable our students to learn English better. We think grammar teaching and language sense training benefit each other in improving students' grammatical competence, which is a necessary component of their communicative ability. In our English language teaching we have tried training our students' language sense and the result is satisfactory. Our students can use the English language more affluently and accurately. So we draw a conclusion that language sense training in English grammar teaching is a useful experiment in improving our English language teaching.
