Ancient Chinese poetry teaching is an important part of the instruction in Chinese language and literature. It not only offers a literary channel which helps the students to gain an insight into the Chinese tradition and culture, but also provides opportunities that benefit them both academically and spiritually. With the development of quality education in China, more and more teachers are coming to see the importance of cultivation of the students' sentiments and feelings. It becomes an urgent need that teaching of ancient poetry play a proper role in this cultivation. This paper, skeptical of the test-oriented approach to the instruction in ancient prose and verse, which stresses the training in knowledge and skills too much, discusses the necessity of implementation of a sentiment-cultivation principle in high school poetry teaching and comments on the misleading conceptions in the field. It also studies the emotion-expressing features of ancient verse works and illustrates with examples the points of patriotism, love, friendship and kinship feelings expressed in them. Then it focuses on the fulfillment of the goal in teaching-the cultivation of the students' feelings, recommending patterns for achieving this goal.
