Since the 90s of 20th century, Shanghai has lifted the curtain on holding major sports events by China. Shanghai has gone through the initial stage of simply accepting national orders to hold major international events and holding occasionally, since the First East Asian Games (1993), the Eighth National Games (1997),2002 Tennis Masters Cup (and get right to host the years 2005-2009's),2010 F1 Chinese Grand Prix (and get right to host for seven consecutive years),2005 48th World Table Tennis Championships,2007 World Special Olympics, the 2008 Olympic Football Preliminary and other major international sports events.And now it enters into the flourish stage that it active choices by market demands, positive bids and orderly operates the events. In order to make the great practice of speeding up the construction of the "Four Centers" and "Four Leaders", Shanghai mainly focus on the major international sports events, continuing to perfect the new organization and management mechanism that explore government-led, community involvement and market operation, increase the impact of brand event, and promote international reputation and competitiveness of Shanghai.Through consulting a large number of historical documents, dividing the development stages of sports events in Shanghai, analyzing the stages characteristics and the problems of the development, this paper could draw the conclusion that:First, the real Shanghai sport events commenced from the modern time. From the modern time to modern and contemporary time, from the end of Opium War to Republican Period and then through War of Resistance against Japan and Civil war, Shanghai sport events developed prosperously and debilitate.Second, after the foundation of New China, sport events have been undertaken as the main task of the mass games by the city of Shanghai. In the "Cultural Revolution" period, the sport industry had almost been frozen. From 1978 till now, the sports development of Shanghai can be divided into three stages. There are starting, developing and developed.Third, according to the analysis of Shanghai sport events' development characteristic, we can see that the sport competitive system, management system and operation system were going into perfection. With the foundation of marketization of economic system, the scope and quantity of Shanghai sport events were becoming more and larger. The operation system of Shanghai sport events changed from state-controlled to actively chosen by market demand and then to government-led, community involvement and market operation.Fourth, through the analysis and conclusion of specialists' conversation, we can see that there are some problems in the development of Shanghai sport events as follows: sports venues were constructed unreasonably; the lack of accumulation of sport events consuming environment; the lack of the influent of sports culture; the lack of high-level talent in the field of sport events and lack of sport events branding.
