The main source of tobacco was using their pin money and from their classmates, and friends'meeting place and accommodation were major smoking place. New medical college students had poor knowledge of smoking hazards to health, radio / television and newspapers / magazines are the main way to acquire knowledge. There was significant difference between friends or classmates of smokers and non smokers, which accounted for 68.42% and 20.69%, respectively and the difference was significant (P <0.01).The rate of smokers who held that smoking was helpful to making friends (36.84%)was far higher than that of non-smokers (4.67%), and the rate of those thought that smoking is not helpful to making friends (10.53%) was much lower than non-smokers(52.94%), the difference was significant (P<0.01). The main reason to encourage smokers to smoke was depression, just wanting to relax and try. Conclusions:The smoking rate of new medical college students was low for smokers had poor knowledge of smoking hazards to health. Rejecting tobacco situation is not optimistic and some environmental factors against control of smoking existed.
