The provincial graduates are the group of intellectuals who emerges with de General Implementation in Tang Dynasty. And the"failed provincial graduates"here refers to a group of rovincial graduates who have failed in the imperial examinations and who are busy with any imperial examinations in their life. It also includes many candidates who have failed to be chosen in the Ministry of Official Personnel Affairs and the Ministry of War in feudal China. Since Sui dynasty when the imperial examinations were first introduced, they have been active in Chinese history. There are so many people of such a kind that it has drawn special attentionIn. They travel about and take part in all kinds of activities.Furthermore,they are usually taken as the heroes in Tang literary sketches.The thesis studies such a kind of people in order to explore the literary influence based on the their backgroud,their conducts and their characters.Generally, the failed provincial graduates have tough fates and bitter experences,which is corresponding to the literature and history in Tang Dynasty,thus reflects the society at that time. They often have two different options after their fails. Some of them would stay at the capital and prepare for the examinations in the next year, while others would travel widely to find a way out. They often suffer the disesteem and discrimination from their families and the society. It even becomes more tougher for them because they are usually not so skillful in making a living, so they are always depressed and discontented, full of feelings of loss. Tang's literary sketches differ from Tang's poems in the literary forms and expressive functions as to the narration and emotional expression. Thus this makes it more effective to describe characters and their minds, assisting authors to explore into the life tragedies of failed provincial graduates by describing some typical characters with their life experiences, hobbies, social relations, spiritual states, etc.The Extensive Records in Taiping edited by Lifang and his friends is regarded as one of the masterpieces in literary sketches of Han and Tang dynasties. As a documentary foundation for the study of failed provincial graduates, this book includes stories about their different lives and end-results after their fails in examinations. The descriptions of these provincial graduates can mainly divided into two categories, one about their settles in the capital, the other about their travels around. In the stories, their life experiences and social realities are also focused upon so as to emphasize the authors'concern on the failed provincial graduates, to reveal the huge impact of the imperial examinations upon the provincial graduates, and to stress the vulnerable position these provincial graduates are in.The failed provincial graduates of ancient Chinese scholars are distressed, who lived poor but creative. They have promoted the development of not only Chinese culture, but also Chinese society.
