A Study On The Image Of "Failed Youth" In New Century Novels

Characters are the primary elements of a novel,which is the spiritual sculpture that can also reflect social style and ideological changes of a specific era.At a time when society is turning rapidly,the portrayal of individual characters inevitably intertwines with the symptoms of the social structure,making the image of “failed youth” one of the most sensitive to the emotions and pulse of this era.Taking the image of “failed youth” in the novels of the new century as the research object,in this study,the reason of formation of “failed youth” and its type division are analyzed and then it is excavated the unique value meaning behind it,and explores the authors’ loopholes in the process of shaping the images of “failed youth”.This paper consists of three parts,namely introduction,main text and conclusion.The part of main text is divided into three chapters.In the first chapter,combined with specific works,with the combination of young people’s family origin,personality characteristics,education and career,marriage and love situation,salary,experience,fate and other internal and external factors,three categories of “failed youth” images are divided for the novels in the new century.The first category is the young people who have entered into major cities but have no room to advance or to retreat.The second category is the intellectual youth who are blocked on their way of getting into the upstream society.The third category is the lost young people.In Chapter II,writers’ subjective factors and social objective factors are taken as the starting points to discuss the causes of the formation of the image of “failed youth” in the novels of the new century.In the writers’ subjective factors,it is focused on the discussion of the close relationship between the writers’ personal growth experience and the images of “failed youth” in their works.On the external environment aspect,the foundation and conditions for the formation of the image of “failed youth” are deeply analyzed from the perspectives of reality and culture.The third chapter expounds the value meaning of the image of “failed youth” in the novel series of the new century,with a view to providereference for the creation of contemporary novels.Finally,it is presented the discussion on the loopholes in the creation of “failed youth” images of the new century,which is mainly manifested as: the excessive pile of suffering elements,the character’s tastelessness,the same pattern of their fate in the end.Undeniably,the creation of the images of “failed youth” nevertheless have many shortcomings;but at least,it still have presented the moaning and appeal of failed young in the material and spiritual difficulties,so that readers could know their confusion and difficulties,desire and struggle,bring a shock of the spiritual mightiness.
