A Study On Literary Sketches Of Tang & Song Dynasties

In the field of Ancient Chinese Novel Studies, the literary sketches are always get less attention. At finite attention, we only look at the historical value, didn’t give them an independent and literary viewpoint, meaning that most studies are stay around of it, had not expansion study from a viewpoint of Stylistics or Theoretical Criticism. In the field of novel studies of Tang & Song dynasties, If we look at the present situation of the studies, the literary sketches are lack of enough attention. In Tang dynasty the mainstream is Legendary novel (Chuan-Qi) and in Song dynasty the research emphasis is the vernacular fiction mainly composed by the story-telling (Hua-Ben), the literary sketches are at a sub-position.There is a high cultural prosperity during the Tang & Song dynasties, and the quantity and quality of the literary sketches both made great achievements. The Tang dynasty is a important transitional stage on the develop of the literary sketches, and the Song dynasty is a stage that the Literary sketches became maturity and prosperity, so, the literary sketches of the Tang & Song dynasties should be a research emphasis of the literary sketches, even the ancient novels. This dissertation is a Comprehensive Study on the literary sketches of the Tang & Song dynasties, In order to make up for the deficiency of the studies existing, the author will concern about many aspects of the literary sketches of the Tang & Song dynasties. During this research we will know the mainly situation about the creation, propagation Criticism of the literary sketches during the Tang & Song period, it will helps us have an overall understanding about the development of the novels during this period, and it will also let us have an accurate location of the literary sketches in the general pattern of the novels during this period.This dissertation will discuss some key problems on the research of the literary sketches. Firstly, there is still confusion about the Intension and Extension of the "novel", "sketches" and "Literary Sketches", which need to make them more clearly. As a connection link of the literary sketches development, the inheritance and change about the creation and idea of the "sketches" or "literary sketches" need to be hackled. Secondly, this dissertation will talk about the background of the compilation, the intention of the compilation, the way of the compilation, the way of the nomenclature, and the catalog description on the literary sketches of the Tang & Song dynasties, which can help us overall understanding the situation of the creation and propagation during this period. Thirdly, in the style study of ancient novels, there already have some special treatises on legendary novels, story-telling and chapter novels (Zhang-Hui), which obtained the academic circle’s accreditation, Meanwhile there still have some disputes about the literary sketches, so in this dissertation, on current study foundation, will study the literary sketches from the angle of the stylistic, which can help us have a deep understanding about the features of the literary sketches’ system, narration and aesthetic. Fourthly, during the discussion the author will not only pay attention to the continuity and the consistency on the creation and style specification of the literary sketches, but also take into account the difference, which is because of the different cultural background between the Tang and Song dynasty, that cause the difference of idea and creation of the literary sketches, eventually cause the difference of the style. At last, this dissertation’s using of material will as much expand as possible, based on the existing. It will use the material that had been neglected or lack of attention, hoping reveal some new views by the analysis.
