As one of'the fourth generation'directors in Chinese mainland film industry, NuanXin Zhang's talented, advanced consciousness, sensitive and innovative, making her walk in front of'the fourth generation'and become an avant-garde director. In 1979, she coauthored with her husband Tuo Li, "Modernizing the Cinematic Phrases", which set off a revolutionary wave of Chinese film's innovation and open the door to explore the film arts. In her limited life, her representations such as'Sha Ou','Sacrifice Youth','Good Morning, Beijing'are considered as the classic films in the new era, and map the ten years endeavor of Chinese film in exploring the trajectory of art. As a representative of "the fourth generation" director, her desire and spirit to the film explorations is throughout the whole film art practice of the fourth, fifth and sixth generation directors, which make her a unique director in Chinese film history that can never be ignored.In this paper, we place Nuanxin Zhang in the environment of the contemporary China's film development, peruse her splendid works and sum up her explorations to documentary aesthetics. Her unique creative perspectives, distinctive artistic personality, tireless exploration as well as innovative attempt in taming commercial films, make her shine out in the history of the Chinese film.
