After the establishment of People's Republic of China, the works of the third, the fourth and the fifth generation of directors constituted the frame of movie creation in new China.Among the creative works of the three generations of directors, lots are adapted from Chinese contemperary literature or master pieces. The classic original literary works selected by directors of the third generation mainly focus on the field of modern literature and works before the new age. As to the whole style of adaption, directors of the third generation appeared to be conservative, they always show great honor to the original works and comply to literariness, at the same time, the age in which they live had brought their films strong political sense. Additionaly, directors of the third generation have their respective features in adaption, for instance, Director Xie Jin tended to select works before the new age, and put some excelent contemporary works on the screen, Director Ling Zifeng, however, always paid attention to modern works, the works from some famous modern writers such as Lao She and Shen Congwen were all altered to film scripts.The adaptive style of directors of the fifth generation had strong awareness of innovation, they mostly comply to the essence of films, original literary works were always altered a lot by them, for them, original works was just like a diving platform, through which they wholy demonstrate their creative styles and characteristics. What they had shown was their own concept of films, but not original literary works.The fourth generation of directors who were in the age of transition had the writing style of both the third and the fifth generations of directors. Concretely speaking, directors in the earlier stage of the fourth generation had strong writing customs left by its preceding generation, their adaptive styles and concepts were quite similar to those of directors of the third generation. In the writing styles of directors in the later stage of the fourth generation, with Director Huang Jianzhong as an example, we can see obviously the temperament and manner of direction of the fifth generation.In the aspect of the interaction between literature and film, the success of directors in the third generation are mostly attributed to the chief source offered by Chinese modern and contemporary literature, we can discover that most films adapted from literary works all receive good reputations, films which are not reaaranged literarily, however, are in common place. The success of the directors of the fifth generation made some excellet literary writers known by the audience, writers such as Shu Tong and Liu Heng are all beneficial owners. At the same time, it had also brought some negative effect, that is the transference of group of writers. For example, writers such as Liu Heng, Liu Zhenyun and Wang Shuo all moved to the writing of films one after another. But this kind of interaction between literature and film is indispensible, to both literature and film. They learn the strong points from each other, and offset their own weakness, consequently, mutual benefit is achieved.
