It is well acknowledged that the development of contemporary film industry inChina is normally divided into six generations, in accordance with the‘inter-generational’ pedigree of Chinese film directors. The Fifth and the Sixthgenerations almost simultaneously achieved their peaks of artistic career.Meanwhile,they two have made great contributions to the development of film in China. When itcomes to the aesthetics styles presented in films, however, it is noticeable that there isa world of differences between the Fifth and the Sixth generations. This article, in away of contrastive analysis, aims to generalize these striking features of differentaesthetics styles shown in various films made by different film directors, trying toanalyze these underlying reasons. Moreover, this article will highlight thecharacteristics of artistic innovation with the purpose of stressing values of differentaesthetics styles.Combined with the study of aesthetics、literature、sociology and psychology, thisarticle, in three different aspects of film narrative style、film artistic image and movietheme, will mainly adopt the research method of contrastive analysis to make athorough analysis of these prominent features of aesthetics styles displayed in severalfilms made by Zhang Yimou and Jia Zhangke respectively.With elaborate demonstrations and analysis, this paper proves that: Firstly,aesthetics styles shown in films made by the Fifth and the Sixth Generations arestrikingly different, which can be seen as the different choices they made in the process of artistic pursuit. Secondly, various reasons, such as historic、literary、social andindividual factors, contribute to different aesthetics styles. Thirdly, these artisticbreakthroughs have outstanding values not only in art but in society. Lastly, differentaesthetics styles undoubtedly serve as an inspiration to the development of Chinesefilm in the future.
