Many research achievements on The Scholars from the aspect of image analysis have been made so far. To take the three second-degree scholars as example, many experts have made progress in the image studies on a single point. It's generally accepted that Yan Gongsheng is a niggard, Ma Chun-shang behind the times and Kuang Chao-ren metamorphic mad. However, systematic research focusing on the second-degree scholars from the overall level is not deepgoing and no monographic study on the second-degree scholars has been conducted till now. In this case, this thesis analyzes the three second-degree scholars in The Scholars expecting to explore this type of scholars synthetically and arose interests in further researches. This paper is divided into four parts.Part one:Introduction. The aim and basis of subject selection are stated in this part. Previous achievements are generalized and the relationships between characters in the novel and figures in reality and between novel and history are also discussed in this part.Part two:Introduction to the scholars system and analysis on the images of scholars in the novel. Good conducts of the three scholars are demonstrated and their potential worries are excavated by analyzing their characters and in turn, selfishness, their commonality is expounded.Part three:the reasons of formation of the second-degree scholars. The existence of the second-degree scholars, a particular group in Confucian scholars, is affected both by the typical social environment and the author's own ideas. It's both internal and external causes that make it come into existence.Part four:the significance of this thesis. With the development of our society and the progress with the times, people gain the knowledge about the imperial examinations system gradually. We understand that the selfishness in those scholars is not only a tragedy of their own but of that age. Thus the hypocrisy of imperial examinations system is recognized in a deeper level and lessons are drawn to take every precaution at beginning.
