| Chinese fan culture has a long history which can be indicated in the ancient legends from the earliest Fuxi Nuwa use the fan to shadow face to King Yao and Emperor shun making fans, then to the Fan-father Qi Huan and the subsequent story of the Eight Immortals. Before Song Dynasty, the mainstream style of China's fan is flat-fan, including silk fan, feather fan and bamboo fan, etc. Starting to be popular in the Song Dynasty, folding fan becomes the mainstream fan in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Attributing to the combined influences of the economy,culture,geographical environment, Suzhou folding fans came to its flourishing period in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.From the perspective of design art, this paper aims to analyze the folding fan culture of Suzhou City in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Specifically, This paper looks into the economic and cultural background of Suzhou folding fan flourish in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, comes out with the artistic and craft characteristics of Suzhou folding fans of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as its influences on other art forms, and summarizes its historical and cultural roots behind, their cultural content and artistic value, and the reference value to the development of Suzhou folding fans today.
